on Dark Side of the Moon at 50, discussing what's going on in "Great Gig in the Sky", and a few riffs on riffs about 1970s pop that seem ill-advised

For the 50th anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon there have been a few pieces, of course.  Contemporary writing about the album can seem full of, well, contemporary bromides.  Take the claim that “Money” is a song written against capitalism.  The men in Pink Floyd wanted to become rich and famous and they surely did, so does ambition or even avarice have to be a distinctly “capitalist” disposition?  That the article went on to quote Roger Waters saying he took the “enormous risk of being truly banal about a lot of it” might be a reminder we need that nobody keeps coming back to the album as a listening experience because of the lyrics.  It was Talking Heads who once intoned in liner notes that lyrics are a trick to get people to listen to music longer.
