Re: something Justin Dean mentioned about recent media and bloggers on full truths

http://www.christianpost.com/news/charges-against-mark-driscoll-and-mars-hill-church-executive-elders-non-disqualifying-says-advisory-board-116924/

Mars Hill Church Communications Director Justin Dean told The Christian Post that he hopes the letter helps clarify other reports about the controversy surrounding Driscoll and the church from media and bloggers "who have not been reporting full truths."

So Dean has said this regarding media and bloggers and some media and some bloggers have published inaccurate information.

But the thing we've documented here at Wenatchee The Hatchet is that unless media and bloggers knew in advance about the week delay that's been set up for sermons hitting the website since 2009, documented here via a transcript of a Mark Driscoll sermon, then any date on which Mark Driscoll is reported as having preached this or that will be a week off.

Of course if Mars Hill Church had not recently obliterated the majority of Mark Driscoll's teaching and preaching this would be easy for any reader to cross reference from the partial transcript made available here to the original audio source material, which, uncharacteristically for the usual Mark Driscoll sermon, was never transcribed.

As The Stranger noted in early 2013, Justin Dean claimed that Mars Hill Church was at the beginning stages of a partnership with Lifelong AIDs Alliance even though it turned out that the organization indicated Mars Hill hadn't even bothered to turn in paperwork yet. That got discussed at Wenatchee The Hatchet over here, which includes links to primary source reporting from The Stranger for consultation.

Let's go back to Justin Dean's commentary regarding the real estate bought by Sound Transit that was covered last year.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Church-Boasts-God-on-Their-Side-in-Property-Dispute-229184911.html
...
The Church had accused Sound Transit of taking the property by eminent domain, which Sound Transit denies. The Church has since backed down on that claim. Now the church leaders are questioning International Paper's acceptance of Sound Transit's offer.

"We bid $250,000 over Sound Transit's bid," Dean said.

In an email, a spokesman for International Paper in Memphis said that's not the case.
"We accepted the highest and best overall offer which was from Sound Transit," wrote International Paper spokesman Kyle Morgolis. "Given our confidentiality agreement, we are unable to disclose the terms of the transaction".

Sound Transit bristles at the idea it finalized the purchase agreement by undercutting and pushing Mars Hill out of any negotiation. "The idea that we intervened in the purchase of the property by them late in the game, that wasn't true," Patrick said. "We didn't hear from them until a week after we entered a binding agreement to purchase that property".

In other words, it looks like it wouldn't even have mattered what Mars Hill was going to bid because Mars Hill apparently didn't even express interest in the real estate until a week after a binding agreement was made for the purchase of the property.  If it's already sold then it doesn't matter what your bid was going to be.  So Justin Dean does not have the most encouraging track record at conveying factually accurate or meaningfully relevant information. That's just for 2013.  For 2012 let's recall that his explanation for how Andrew Lamb's disciplinary situation was conveyed to The City it was due to "unclear communication".  Pleading organizational incompetence is not the most endearing way to handle a PR situation involving a former member, is it? But that seems to be the card Justin Dean decided to play.

Now, regarding something else, the Board of Advisors and Accountability clarifying what they considered a factually inaccurate statement. Something we've discussed over here may be worth revisiting.

http://marshill.com/2014/03/07/a-note-from-our-board-of-advisors-accountability

To correct a statement in a recent article, Pastor Sutton Turner was the General Manager, not the Executive Pastor or Executive Elder as reported, at the time he signed with the referenced agreement with Result Source. In the time since this campaign we have established a new Executive Elder team, new Board of Advisors and Accountability, as well as a new marketing team.

Here's some stuff from the post that highlights something, that Sutton Turner was presenting himself as Executive Pastor for months at his LinkedIn profile, which is to say that for months he presented himself as having had the role of Executive Pastor at Mars Hill Church from April 2011 to "present", which would have been April 2012 at the time of the blog post that cited his profile:

Executive Pastor
Mars Hill Church
Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Religious Institutions industry
April 2011– Present (1 year 1 month)Seattle, Washington

Sutton currently serves Mars Hill Church as Executive Elder and Executive Pastor. Mars Hill is a 15,000+ multi-site church with 14 current churches across the states of Washington, California, New Mexico, and Oregon. Mars Hill has planted over 400 churches through its www.Acts29Network.org and trains disciples through www.theResurgence.org. As Executive Pastor, Sutton oversees all centralized functions for all Mars Hill Churches and Acts 29.

The LinkedIn profile has since been edited into the following, at least since the week of the BOAA statement:

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/sutton-turner/12/525/91b

Executive Pastor & Executive Elder
Mars Hill Church
Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Religious Institutions industry
April 2011 – Present (3 years) seattle, washington

Sutton currently serves Mars Hill Church as Executive Elder and Executive Pastor. Mars Hill is a multi-site church with 14 current churches across the states of Washington, California, New Mexico, and Oregon. Mars Hill has planted over 400 churches through its www.Acts29Network.org and trains disciples through www.theResurgence.org. As Executive Pastor, Sutton oversees all centralized functions for all 14 Mars Hill Churches, TheResurgence.com, Mars Hill Global, Mars Hill Network, Resurgence Books, and Resurgence Conference, all external Campaigns, as well as serving Pastor Mark Driscoll as his Executive Pastor.

April 2011 thru November 2011 he served as General Manager before becoming an elder.
So Sutton Turner himself has to bear some responsibility for misinformation about his having been an Executive Pastor at the time the ResultSource contract was signed because in 2012 Turner's own LinkedIn profile described him as having had that role prior to November 2011.  The Mars Hill Board of Advisors and Accountability can't very well complain about journalists or bloggers getting some facts wrong about Turner having been an executive pastor prior to November 2011 if by Turner's own account that's the role he had.

Let's bear in mind that maybe having "kingly gifts" leads to fuzziness about history, seeing as Jamie Munson has listed himself as having been "Executive pastor, President" for Mars Hill Church from 1999 to 2011 even though in 1999 he couldn't have been other than an intern.
Executive Pastor, President

Mars Hill Church

Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Religious Institutions industry
October 1999 – September 2011 (12 years) Seattle

So it would appear that Turner and Munson at least had in common reporting themselves on their LinkedIn profiles as having executive leadership roles they didn't actually have as far back as they reported earlier.

So while Justin Dean can feel free to inform the Christian Post that media and bloggers have not been reporting full truths it's coming across like Justin Dean and Mars Hill Church executive leadership have their own history of not reporting full truths from the look of things.

Thought this is worth a mention. It appears to be relatively common practice for people on LinkedIn to simply update the title of their existing job when promoted, rather than creating a new 'position'.

I think LinkedIn is aware of this as they have renamed the link to do this multiple times over the years (it's currently 'Add Position').

So it's not unusual for someone to join a firm as a graduate, then subsequently update their title multiple times, until it looks like they have been a Senior Manager from the time they joined as a graduate.

Thank you for dedicating a blog post to this topic. Justin Dean, the PR voice of Mars Hill, has a long history of making one statement only to retract/correct himself within a day or two, and often the corrections are complete reversals of what was initially said. I've been wondering for a long time when he'd be getting the ax -- making Mark Driscoll look bad has to be akin to treason in the Mars Hill empire. How many times does your PR team blunder the messaging before you get new PR? Even if the original message came straight from Mark Driscoll's lips, there's no guarantee that would protect Dean when his name is all over the press releases.

RE: LinkedIn

It's a User Experience problem.
They have not provided a clear interface for updated employment with a new title.
You have to add a new job entirely but put in the same company to show that your title/job description changed. It is not intuitive at all.

I've seen many, many people whose profiles seem misleading.
LinkedIn problem, not a 'lying' problem.

fair enough, LinkedIn seems unwieldy at times, doesn't it?

In light of recent discussions from former staff at MH the possibility that MH executive leadership has lied about stuff seems harder and harder to discount, though.

Puritan, yes, sometimes Justin Dean and MH PR seem to be better at actually creating PR problems for MHC than ameliorating them.
