Of course
your pastor is online and church is livestream. How could it be otherwise? He’s
not just online with three years of
livestream content at RealFaith, he’s also participating in a special one day only
Fathom Events movie and excited to share the news via X (formerly known as
Twitter). At least all of that is the case if your pastor is Mark Driscoll.. When
he dissed livestreams as not being church he meant your church, dear pastor
or priest, not his church.
Are you
ready for The Domino Revival? Have you
never heard of it? Neither had I until a
couple of weeks ago. So Wenatchee The
Hatchet had a bit of catching up to do.
I’ve
discussed how Driscoll has done preaching by way of a week-delay DVD during his
Mars Hill years already. He was excited to announce in 2009 that he’d
preach at the Mars Hill Ballard campus, a crew would pick his best performance
from the filmed options, and turn that into a DVD that would be shipped out to
all the satellite campuses of Mars Hill so everyone else could hear the same
sermon with a week delay. If you were at
Mars Hill Church between mid-2009 through the bitter end of 2014 when Mars Hill
announced its corporate dissolution and you were anywhere where Mark Driscoll
wasn’t preaching live, every sermon you got was played through a DVD a week
after Mark Driscoll preached it. I know this because I attended Mars Hill for
the better part of nine years, stayed in touch with friends and relatives who
attended, and transcribed the part of the sermon in which Driscoll made the DVD
preaching announcement. That was then.
During
the era of covid-19, however, Driscoll concluded that technologically mediated
church was not church at all if it was done by churches seeking to comply with
government-mandated prevention protocols.
In his newest book New
Days, Old Demons Mark Driscoll contends that the United States is under
the power of the demonic Ahab and Jezebel spirits and that Ahabs are running
churches. Many pastors opted for livestream as a way to comply with covid-19
restrictions and those pastors are weak, cowardly woke beta-male counterfeits.
Ironically,
Mark Driscoll has used livestream to urge his listeners to take a stand before
it’s too late. Among three years’ worth

Mark Driscoll hasn’t really been against livestreamed virtual church events at
all..
So
church can be livestreamed with Mark Driscoll after all, What about revival? Well, there’s a movie for that, called The
Domino Revival. Forget about
Jonathan Edwards’ preaching and the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry
God” this new Great Awakening comes with a one-day only Fathom event. Driscoll

You might
think that if livestreaming reflected a weak beta male Ahab spirit that revival
via livestream and movie would not be something Mark Driscoll would
seriously want to be a part of, but he’s featured in the upcoming movie and
feels honored to be featured in it. A short piece from The Christian Post has
some details.

Weaver, Isaiah Saldivar, Jessi and Parker
Green, Alexander Pagani, Jeremiah Johnson, Andy Byrd, and many
others, will premiere in theaters for one night on Oct. 24.
The film explores how faith leaders have witnessed a spiritual
awakening during what they describe as “America’s darkest hour.”
America’s
darkest hour wasn’t the American Civil War, it wasn’t The Great Depression, nor the "day that will live in infamy". Forget the assassinations of Lincoln or JFK or MLK or the explosion of the Challenger or even 9/11. No, America's darkest hour seems to be that the darkest hour this nation has
faced is right about now. There’s also
been a revival going on, the amazing sort of revival that has been happening
all around us that we wouldn’t have known about had this Fathom Events feature
not been made. When asked why he was
excited to be part of the thing Driscoll is described as saying:
ChurchLeaders reached out to Driscoll, who wasn’t
able to attend the premiere due to the birth of his grandson, and asked why he
believes “The Domino Revival” is an important film.
The difference between a biography and a testimony
is who the hero is,” Driscoll said. “The world tells stories in terms of
biography: how someone overcame odds, slayed their dragon, or climbed their
mountain. The church tells stories in terms of testimony: how our God is
faithful, powerful, and is still showing up and showing off.”
“This movie is a testimony about the power of the
Holy Spirit unleashed through the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he added. “God is
the hero!”
Driscoll shared that he is concerned for the
American Church today because “the world is run by the controlling, seducing,
and castrating rainbow flag-waving Jezebel spirit. The church is run by the
tolerating, enabling, and compromising soft-woke Ahab spirit.”
The controversial pastor said that “we desperately
need Elijah’s with the Holy Spirit making trouble, picking battles, and setting
things on fire,” encouraging believers to “stop being pathetic. Start being
prophetic. Call the shots. Take the shots. Stop making excuses. And to start
making plans.”
“To be a Christian, you must give God your sin. To
be a Christian leader, you must give God your reputation,” he concluded. “Close
your ears, open your Bible, tell the truth, and get used to being punched in
the face by the world and anointed in the pulpit by the Lord.”
Notably, Driscoll resigned in disgrace as pastor of
Mars Hill Church in Seattle in 2014 following allegations that he was an
abusive leader. Similar allegations have been made against Driscoll during his
time as current pastor of Trinity Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.

There
is a situational irony in Mark Driscoll being so excited to be featured in a
movie that is about a revival, which is simply that back in 2011 as Mars Hill
Church was still growing he was the main character and narrator in the
fundraising film God’s Work, Our Witness that was a sermon series at
Mars Hill.

The
feature culminated in a request for more money with an admonition that Mark Driscoll
and the other leaders knew the congregants could and should be willing to shell
out more money for the mission of Mars Hill Church. These days Driscoll is apparently happy to have a comparatively bit part in someone else's movie about revival. And yet that is not necessarily a sign of a newer, humbler Mark Driscoll.
New
Days, Old Demons
is a self-published book. On page 1 Driscoll shared the following:
Welcome to my accidental book.
I did not intend to write this book.
I had been preparing to preach a sermon series on
Elijah and sat down during what was supposed to be a week off after Christmas
in the mountains with my wife Grace, to collect my thoughts. As I started
writing, things started changing. I spent most of an entire 24-hour day doing
my best impression of Rain Man meets Old Testament. It was like my mind was
downloading truths—many of which I had never read, heard, or thought. I ended
up down numerous rabbit holes diving into biblical and historical research,
pulling together tens of thousands of hours of Bible study and teaching, books
about Ahab and Jezebel I’d read, and before I knew it, I had this accidental
book. …
On pages
6-7 he wrote:
… This book is self-published so it cannot be
cancelled, has no endorsements so that no one else can be attacked, is free in
digital format, and available in print for a gift of any amount with all
proceeds going to RealFaith to get more Bible teaching out so that my motives
for writing it are clear. This is the most popular sermon series I have ever
preached since I became a senior pastor in 1996., and I believe the truths I’m
sharing are the most anointed and prophetic, so thank you for giving me the
honor of sharing them with you.
A voice in the desert,
Pastor Mark Driscoll
Just so
we’re clear, I, Wenatchee The Hatchet, attended Mars Hill from roughly later
1999 through the spring of 2009. I met co-founding pastors Mark Driscoll, Mike
Gunn and Lief Moi in the early days of Mars Hill. I remember a man who avidly read Gordon Fee,
John Stott, J. I. Packer, Augustine, Wayne Grudem, John Piper, Cornelius
Plantinga, John Stott and other writers.
He was firm against both theonomy and postmillennialism back in those
days with which I have frankly agreed. I
was eventually recruited to be part of the Mars Hill Theology Response team by
an elder and a deacon of Mars Hill somewhere around 2006 or so. So I write as someone who was not interested in
“doing ministry” but was happy to serve where leaders thought I could and as
part of the Theology Response Team I fielded some questions elders thought were
important enough to get answered if not directly by Mark Driscoll. So at no point could Mark Driscoll or any of
his more recent associates claim that Wenatchee The Hatchet is not “Reformed”
or “cessationist” since I personally advised Driscoll to reconsider what he
told me to my face was his tendency to default to cessationism. I admit there have been times I regret that
because Mark Driscoll has not become a Pentecostal of the Gordon Fee or, say,
maybe the Graham Twelftree variety. No,
he’s cranked out a literal day’s worth of bilge that even TBN executives would
balk at publishing.
So let
me close with a hypothetical review of New Days, Old Demons as I think
the Mark Driscoll of 2003 would have written if he read the Mark Driscoll of
2022 to 2023’s book.
This book is amazing. It’s amazing anyone would be so reckless and
foolish as to think this should have been published.
The author says he wrote the whole thing in a
day and clearly that’s the case.
The guy can’t even keep straight the fact that the Bible tells us the
Israelite monarchy was divided.
Ahab can’t be a counterfeit David sitting on David’s throne because God
gave ten of the twelve tribes of Israel to Jeroboam after Solomon’s son
Rehoboam alienated most of God’s people.
That’s just a reading comprehension fail, bro, such a basic failure you
can’t trust he gets anything else right in his 274-page book.
There are at least eleven cases where the guy
quotes his own works, but not books published by Zondervan or Tyndale or
publishers with editors. No, the books
he published that he quotes are published by Charisma House or self-published
pamphlets he wrote or published after he had a Richard Nixon moment where he
resigned from his old church under a cloud of suspicion that included a plagiarism
scandal; blaming his research aides for the problems rather than being man
enough to admit his own failures; rigging the New York Times bestseller list; and
after all that he thinks he’s a prophetic voice in the desert like Elijah? This guy’s not an Elijah, he’s like Ahab and
Jezebel rolled up into one seriously self-deceived dude.
Sorry, bro, this book does not read like “the
book of Revelation meets a death metal band in a cage match on Halloween.” This book reads like it was made in a crazy
automatic writing trance by a guy who spent a literal day cutting and pasting
his old books and self-published pamphlets with charismaniac nonsense and is
passing himself off as an Elijah for our time. Maybe he really believes he
is, but his actual book reads like he dribbled the idiot ball against his own
face for a whole day and, sadly, believes that his automatic writing session
had to be published. Seriously, pray
that Jesus would deliver this man from his delusions of grandeur. Revival is something that only comes through
the work of the Holy Spirit and you can’t make revival happen by making a movie
about it. That’s just a kind of witchcraft that tries to control what God does
and it’s demonic.
Based
on the Mark Driscoll I met and knew a little between 1999 and 2003 that is what
I think he’d say about New Days, Old Demons.
