I remember Morton Feldman saying in the ’70s that if there was one musical idea that was finally dead, it was multimovement form. But weren't the 1970s arguably the apotheosis of the concept album in progressive rock and pop music? It might have seemed to Feldman mulimovement form was dead in concert music but it seems that the idea of the album picked up in popular music where multimovement form merely seemed like a dead letter somewhere else. It's not like Dark Side of the Moon is multimovement form in the same way that Beethoven's Hammerklavier is but who says it has to be? Ideas can be elastic.
