haiku 6-30-2026

on internet prolegomena, in three movements
(a parable on 2st century Anglo-American conservative Christian blogging
                  regarding cultural issues)

I.
The church organist
has been preluding too long.
Let's hear the hymn now.

II.
Of the writing of
prolegomena there is,
verily, no end.

III.
Prelude on prelude,
always hearing a prelude
but never a fugue.

two haiku on paradoxes in arts appreciation and men of culture

2-7-2026
the best of the best,
i ate and savored it all
and made crap from it

2-7-2026
men of culture are
so busy appraising they
skimp on creating

a haiku (9-6-2025)

 nobody who asks,
"where have all the great men gone?"
will find (or be) one

Reach the Golden Mean?
That's too hard. I'll settle for
the Bronze Median

some draw more pleasures
from their acts of appraisal
than what they appraise

heard on a school bus ca. 1988 one drizzly Oregon morning

You're all a bunch of
posers!  I liked White Lion
before they were cool!

***
The statement was unforgettable and the rejoinder was the same, "White Lion still sucks!"
Only decades later did I realize the lines about White Lion so easily lent themselves to being presented as a haiku

In all my years I have seen this perdue,
across my whole life this thing does persist:
no one rants about the death of culture
quite like an "optimillennialist"

Had Stevie Nicks sung
it wouldn't have worked

a variation from 2-20-2022
Had Stevie Nicks sung
about "the loggerhead shrike"
it wouldn't have worked

the trajectory of want (in Christmas novelty songs)--a haiku

ends in needing the deed to

No, there was absolutely no way I was going to link to any other version than Eartha's. It's glorious and all the other fools who ever sang the song should hide their faces in shame!

I mean, I mentioned I was gonna get things back to music but several posts aren't ready but this little haiku about Christmas novelty songs was ready so ...

sometimes ... (a haiku)

"Come On Eileen" sounds
like The Cure covered a song
by Village People

side note ... I'm going to see about having a score for the analysis of Op. 31 No. 2 in A minor (let the reader understand) later this upcoming weekend. It's been a while since we've gotten back to music stuff.

a wry axiom about axioms

 silence is golden
unless you are a parent.
then it's suspicious!

PS, not that I'm a parent. I'm paraphrasing into a haiku something one of my relatives shared.

a haiku with a Christmas music theme

the band Air Supply
never rocked harder than when
they covered "Sleigh Ride"

Of course, they didn't rock as hard as the 1948 recording of "Sleigh Ride" ... but would we expect Air Supply to have done that?

This is one of the classics of "light classical" and, frankly, I always heard this version when I was younger and admit to feeling that adding lyrics to the music was basically a mistake.

I'm still kind of vacationing from blogging in terms of what I normally write but I can throw in little poems here and there.

haiku in Seattle 9-19-2020 7:52 am

Praise the Lord for wind

that drives away heavy smoke!

Praise the Lord for rain!

three poems about music (two watered down acid and one pure acid)

6-24-2020
Taupin and John wrote
a famous long song based on
"Insert your name here"

6-30-2020
Each day the radio plays "Let it Be"
and I find myself asking "Must it Be?"
The answer to this cannot be a shock.
The Beatles are the Beethoven of Rock.
The only answer there can ever be
is to say that "It must be!  It must be!"

7-10-2020
Train is what you get
if the Spin Doctors did a
Counting Crows cover

The first two poems are about music that I think has been oversold but still basically holds up on repeated listenings.  The last poem is about three bands whose music I loathe.

haiku about this year

2020:
film by Takashi Miike
script by Argento

The soundtrack could be by Penderecki perhaps

remembering an old poem I wrote, riffing on a specific American "rebel" mentality, during a time of lockdown

Ecclesiastes 9:4-5 Common English Bible (CEB)
4 Whoever is among the living can be certain about this. A living dog is definitely better off than a dead lion, 5 because the living know that they will die. But the dead know nothing at all. There is no more reward for them; even the memory of them is lost.

the action hero breaks the fourth wall

it is far better
to be a dying lion
than a living dog
