Some of what I've seen has people talking about the SPD as a white supremacist organization with a white supremacist history which, if people are going to assert that they could at least include some nuance as to how that claim is to explain Carmen Best being chief of police. Why am I supposed to believe she's a white supremacist by dint of having the role she has? This isn't to suggest the SPD hasn't had a history of using excessive force against minorities, that part isn't hard to discover in the history of Puget Sound, the puzzle is more why people collapse the militarization of policing into a white supremacist narrative in such a way that Best's role can be elided into that as if she were functionally a Klan leader in the rhetoric used to describe how the SPD has treated people. It seems there has to be room for at least some nuance that can account for that.
Given the pandemic quarantine restrictions that a socialist like Sawant has supported protesting "is" a reason why peole who lean right, or lean waaay right, have been convincing themselves the whole covid-19 pandemic is just a ginned up government scare to get all the paranoid liberal sheeple to conform without any real evidence. The possibility that we've been dealing with a novel virus for which there is not yet immunity; for which herd immunity might only be gained at the price of letting old and people with health at the margins die; so that the economy can "bounce back" without considering another possibility that the economy is going to stay gutted and that we're already in another Great Depression and possibly have been trending that way since 2008 anyway seems to be off the table for conservatives who are committed to some ideological stance in which anything wrong with the economy is only the result of liberal economic and social policies.
Had Clinton won the electoral college vote we would most likely still be in the basic situation we're in with respect to the virus. The constraints that may be needed to curb the spread of the virus would stall the economy and conservatives who right now are skeptical about the reality and legitimacy of the virus might be singing a lengthy chorus on how Clinton and the liberal media planned all of covid 19 to kill the American economy. Since Clinton didn't win the electoral college vote and we've got Trump in office that's not necessarily on the table for movement conservatives of the sort who voted for him ... but then for the last twenty to thirty years a duopolistic commitment within American politics seems to ensure that whatever tyranny or surveillance state activities there are can only be read as tyrannical if the wrong people are wielding the power, not due to the nature of the powers invoked.
and ... in a development that could not have surprised anyone including Mayor Durkan ...
