James Cameron's Avatar as a work of science fiction ...

Years ago a friend described James Cameron's film Avatar as "hard sci-fi" and while in the past I could only snort in disbelief today I can provide a different reply with greater specificity:

James Cameron's film Avatar is to hard science fiction what My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is to socialist realism.

It might help me if I knew your definition of "Hard Science Fiction" and what Socialist Realism was.

But no, I'm not much into Avatar as Science Fiction anything. It was visually stunning. But that's about it.

What examples would you give of hard science fiction? In fact, how would you divide science fiction into sub-categories, hard, soft, space opera, fantasy, etc?
Just curious.
