CT--Drew Dyck interview of Mark Driscoll, Jan 2014 touches on pastoral health and Driscoll's naturopath

Before we get to recent history we need to revisit the past:

Of Brokenness and Buddies

I write this blog while flying somewhere over the United States late on a Thursday night heading home from a conference in the great nation of Texas. I have blogged very little thus far in 2007 as I have been playing hurt in terms of my health. I have been pushing it for ten years since Mars Hill Church opened up, and the end of last year was a particularly rough patch. I was looking forward to a few weeks off after Christmas to catch up on sleep. Sadly, what happened is that I would be very tired and go to bed at a decent hour only to wake up a few hours later, unable to return to sleep. I was not stressed out or thinking, but it seemed something was physically wrong. Even sleeping pills were of little to no help and by the end of the holidays I was exhausted, having slept an average of perhaps three hours a night. A naturopath said I had overextended myself and worn out my adrenal glands (which regulate my sympathetic nervous system). [emphasis added] The result of basically a decade of perpetual stress and a final taxing season was that I was exhausted all day—I literally had blurred vision and would fall asleep quickly only to wake up a few hours later, unable to sleep again. So, I have been conserving energy for my family and church, but some Sundays are brutal. I find myself nodding off on the side of the stage before one of the four services I preach live.

I am learning a lot about how to do more than just push through it and hope to share what I am learning at an upcoming regional training in Seattle for pastors. The sessions will be vodcast and podcast here on Resurgence in hopes of helping other leaders learn from my mistakes and avoid my condition. Nothing permanent seems to have been done, but without a change in pace, stress, Sabbath, vacations, diet, exercise, and supplements, I could end up in a really bad place a few years down the road. I find this to be what the Puritan Flavel calls a “sanctified affliction,” given to me by God out of His great love. My naturopath, who is a wise and godly Christian brother, said that if I heed God’s advice, I will enjoy a Sabbath rest. But, if I ignore it, He will impose a Sabbath on me through physical inability to continue and so I am taking steps to walk in greater wisdom and repentance. In January we added no new services or campuses in an effort to slow things down until we can aggressively expand the church next fall. However, we still grew by as many as 1,000 people in a month and had to turn people away from services for the first time in many years. This means that the demands are as intense as ever so the Sabbath issue is an urgent priority. Encouragingly, the past month has also been filled with some wise counsel that has been very helpful in laying out a plan for the next season of life and ministry.

Mark Driscoll, June 14, 2007

I have been pushing it for ten years since Mars Hill Church opened up, and the end of last year was a particularly rough patch. I was looking forward to a few weeks off after Christmas to catch up on sleep. Sadly, what happened was that I would be very tired and go to bed at a decent hour only to wake up a few hours later, unable to return to sleep. I was not stressed out or thinking, but it seemed something was physically wrong. Even sleeping pills were of little to no help and by the end of the holidays I was exhausted, having slept an average of perhaps three hours a night. [emphasis added] The result of basically a decade of perpetual stress and a final taxing season was that I was exhausted all day—I literally had blurred vision and would fall asleep quickly only to wake up a few hours later, unable to sleep again. So, I spent a few months conserving energy for my family and church, but some Sundays were brutal. At times, I actually found myself nodding off on the side of the stage before one of the four services I preach live.

Nothing permanent seems to have been done, but without a change in pace, stress, Sabbath, vacations, diet, exercise, and supplements, I could end up in a really bad place a few years down the road. Now having laid the groundwork there, we can revisit the recent Christianity Today interview.
Published January 1, 2014, this Christianity Today interview between Drew Dyck of Leadership Journal deliberately avoided the still unresolved cascade of controversy associated with Mark Driscoll's plagiarism and focused on Mark Driscoll's history as a leader and discussed the importance of health for pastoral work.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/le/2014/january/survivor.html

...  Put my head down, worked seven days a week. I preached, gosh, 48 or 50 Sundays a year, five or six times a Sunday, an hour or more per sermon. And I traveled to speak, to make ends meet, because I was still supplementing my income. I didn't even have a full-time assistant until we hit 6,000. And by then my wife and I had five kids.

It was go, go, go, and at some point my body just couldn't go anymore. I once had an old car and the ignition would get stuck. You'd have to literally pop the hood and disconnect the battery to make it stop. I was like that car. I couldn't shut down. I couldn't sleep. I'd fall asleep for an hour, wake up, and then be up all night. I'd be exhausted but unable to sleep. I had adrenal fatigue.

What finally happened?
First I went to a conventional doctor, who told me I needed blood pressure meds, heartburn medicine, sleep medicine, anxiety medicine. I'm like, Man, I'm in my 30s. That's a lot of medicine! [emphasis original] So I went and found a naturopathic doctor, who said, "You need to quit your job and find a different vocation."

Let's not bother discussing adrenal fatigue as a possibly junk drawer diagnosis on the order of something like peripheral neuropathy.  Let's stick to the narrative as narrative for now.

In this first page of the interview Driscoll explained how he was running ragged and went to a conventional medical doctor who advised him to take medications for heartburn, blood pressure, and sleep.  Driscoll seemed to feel this was a lot of medicine to take so he turned to a naturopath whose advice was "quit your job".  Not wanting to quit his job he then found another naturopath ...

http://www.christianitytoday.com/le/2014/january/survivor.html?start=2
I said, "Well, Jesus said to do this, so that's not really an option."  So I found another naturopathic doctor. He gave me supplements, vitamins, minerals, IV treatments for adrenal support, and custom tailored vitamins. He put me on a regimen for wellness and recovery. His approach was to naturally rebuild the body, to not just treat the symptoms. He told me, "You've got to work really hard to change your lifestyle and your organization, everything."

So the conventional medical doctor was going to prescribe a lot of medicine Mark seemed to feel he shouldn't have to take in his 30s and the first naturopath told him he needed to quit his job.  Whether or not the second naturopath Driscoll described in the CT interview was John Catanzaro is not 100% certain because in the 2007 blog posts Driscoll just mentioned one naturopath.

The subsequent pages of the CT Jan 2014 interview can be read at this links.

Since the scrub job on John Catanzaro at The Resurgence is pretty thorough it's worth noting that after half a decade Mark Driscoll has referred to his naturopath in so many settings since 2007

For those who haven't read the news lately:

http://www.bothell-reporter.com/news/242811021.html
http://www.doh.wa.gov/Newsroom/2014NewsReleases/14014SnohomishCountyNaturopathSuspended.aspx

The response from Mars Hill via The Resurgence has been to scrub all of Catanzaro's articles that were formerly available there.  If you want to find captures of all the articles Catanzaro wrote that were formerly available at The Resurgence they've been compiled at this blog post here at Wenatchee The Hatchet.

CT interview from 1-1-14, about that assistant history ... Driscoll has had assistants since at least 2005, full-time or not

http://www.christianitytoday.com/le/2014/january/survivor.html

[emphasis added]

It bears mentioning that Driscoll emphasizes that he didn't have a full-time assistant until Mars Hill hit 6,000 people.  That's an interesting distinction because as early as 2004 somebody was an executive assistant at Mars Hill:

http://theresurgence.com/files/pdf/aj_hamilton_2004_why_your_pastor_should_outsource_his_mind.pdf
copyright 2004 by Mars Hill Church by permission from Acts 29 Network
A. J. Hamilton, Executive Assistant at Mars Hill Church

He may not have been Mark Driscoll's personal executive assistant at the time, but Hamilton was an executive assistant to someone(s) or something.  A. J. Hamilton shared how an executive assistant could handle tedious details like corporate credit card reconciliation

The 2004 material concepts reprinted with permission from Acts 29 Network reappeared in 2010 in the following way.

http://theresurgence.com/2010/03/09/why-your-pastor-should-outsource-his-mind
http://theresurgence.com/2010/03/10/how-to-outsource-your-mind-choosing-an-assistant

Turns out A. J. Hamilton had quite a piece written up about how he became Mark Driscoll's assistant in 2005.  While it remains to be cleared up at what point Mars Hill Church hit 6,000 people this would seem to have been in the zone of 2006-2008, so the general timeline makes it plausible but not clear that Hamilton was full-time or part-time just from these articles.

http://theresurgence.com/2013/10/21/organizing-your-life-with-an-assistant

In 2005 I received the incredible offer to become Pastor Mark Driscoll’s executive assistant. [emphasis added] I had been on staff at Mars Hill Church for four years already, serving in a variety of roles, so I had insight into nearly every aspect of church leadership up to that point. But it was nothing compared to the next season of serving Pastor Mark and seeing where God was taking this church.

[WtH: Now it's very likely he wasn't full time because it was informally stated in a number of circles Hamilton took care of managing real estate Driscoll rented to others.  This LinkedIn profile, if Hamilton's would also explain why Hamilton wasn't in a position to be full-time

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/aj-hamilton/23/822/787]

Uncertain expectations

Prior to becoming Pastor Mark’s assistant, my interaction with him had been limited, so I had no idea what would be most helpful to him. Instead of tossing me into the position to figure it out as I went, Pastor Mark prepared a document for me without which I would not have had a smooth transition into my new role or been helpful to him as his assistant.

A well-defined new role

What Pastor Mark handed me was a sixty-five-page document. [emphasis added, and this was for a part-time position?] He detailed his spiritual gifts; professional resume; priorities in his life, home, and work; his personal workflow techniques; church growth articles; homework for me in order to grow in my understanding of assisting in general; and the first iteration of a job description. In addition to explaining his ministry, he explained what would be my ministry.

Preparing the pastor and assistant to be fruitful together

When I talk with pastors struggling under the weight of church leadership and church planting, the topic of hiring an assistant comes up often. Pastor Mark created that original sixty-five-page document for me, but most pastors have not taken the time to work on their ministry because working in their ministry is monopolizing their time.

Now who is currently listed as Mark Driscoll's executive assistant?  Someone named Frank Park.

During this time I acted as assistant to the founder and lead pastor of Mars Hill and the Acts 29 Church Planting Network. This was a time of exponential growth...groing from a church of 5,000 at 6 location to a church of over 10,000 with a dozen locations across three states. I managed calendar and communications working across all departments of the church, but also other ministries throughout the country and internationally. I planned and coordinated a very busy travel schedule, and went on many trips during this time throughout the U.S. and abroad to England, Ireland, Turkey, and South Africa, and developed and led a support team to match the increased volume and complexity of work.

Somewhere along the line before May 2008 Hamilton had the job

http://pastormark.tv/2011/12/08/preaching-live-at-mars-hill-Albuquerque
This Sunday will be a big celebration of God’s grace at Mars Hill Albuquerque. The church, led by my former assistant and now lead pastor, AJ Hamilton, is our fastest growing church.
Mars Hill Albuquerque began as a result of a merger between Mars Hill Church and City on a Hill in the summer of 2009 with two services and just under 400 adults and 65 kids in attendance each Sunday. Since then they’ve grown to three services, over 750 people, including 125 kids, and have witnessed almost 300 baptisms. This growth, as indicated by the 300 baptisms, is mostly through conversions, and by God’s grace they have the highest conversion rate percentage of any Mars Hill church.

By Jamie Munson's account AJ Hamilton and his family moved out to help with the assimilation of Dave Bruskas' City on a Hill Church into the Mars Hill Church orbit.

http://marshill.com/2010/05/02/dont-get-too-comfortable
... Having been around Mars Hill Church for the last 12+ years, I’ve seen this play out time and time again. Many churches and campuses have been started out of Mars Hill, and in the process many dear friends have moved on—either to a different campus or in some cases to an entirely different state. For example, last summer Pastor AJ Hamilton and his family moved to Albuquerque to help start our campus there. The Hamiltons were close friends with my wife and I, and our kids hung out regularly.

Why it's even a big deal that someone like Mark Driscoll didn't have a full-time assistant until the church hit 6,000 is inexplicable.  That Driscoll has had assistance constantly since at least 2005 in some form or another is easily established.

HT Jim West: Warren Throckmorton posts about Mark Driscoll's naturopath suspended Jan 2014

Jim West's very brief commentary which links to

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/warrenthrockmorton/2014/01/30/doctor-recommended-by-mark-driscoll-suspended-over-experimental-vaccine/

The post in turn links to
a complaint
https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/providercredentialsearch/CaseLaserFicheDocView.aspx?DocId=194852

a press release announcing the suspension in response to allegations that John Catanzaro tricked cancer patients into taking an unapproved experimental vaccine:
http://www.doh.wa.gov/Newsroom/2014NewsReleases/14014SnohomishCountyNaturopathSuspended.aspx
and local news coverage
http://www.king5.com/news/local/Bothell-naturopathic-doctor-suspended-for-experimental-vaccine-242703981.html

and a link to evidence that there have been earlier complaints leveled against Catanzaro in courts.
https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/providercredentialsearch/CaseLaserFicheDocView.aspx?DocId=88656

As Throckmorton has noted, Catanzaro's articles have all been scrubbed away from The Resurgence and the author profile is kinda empty.

Wenatchee The Hatchet was considering blogging about the naturopath last year, actually, but observing the shifts in governance; the history of Mars Hill real estate acquisitions; and the not-very-subtle detail that chapter 7 of Real Marriage was obviously indebted to Dan Allender's work without acknowledging his work took priority.  It just slipped into the land of forgetfulness.

That said, the naturopath has been mentioned, it seems, at least incidentally in material published by Mark Driscoll we've quoted from in the past

http://web.archive.org/web/20070320075759/http://theresurgence.com/md_blog_2007-03-17_of_brokenness_and_buddies

A naturopath said I had overextended myself and worn out my adrenal glands (which regulate my sympathetic nervous system). [emphasis added]

You can read the whole thing for references to Ed Young and others but it's the reference to a naturopath here that is relevant. A possible reference to Catanzaro may have been made in the following sermon:

http://marshill.com/media/acts-empowered-for-jesus-mission/empowered-by-the-spirit-to-heal
Acts 3:1-10
June 30, 2013

My own experience is my medical doctor is also an evangelical Christian. Every time I meet with him, he prays for me. It’s like that. It’s like that. He says, “OK, here’s your bloodwork, and here’s where you’re at, and here’s your tests, and you know, here’s what we see. So, here’s what you need to do with your diet and your supplements, and here’s what I’m recommending. OK, now let me pray for you.” It’s all of that. It’s all of that. We don’t believe in just treating the soul. We don’t believe in just treating the body. We believe in loving and serving the person.
If it was John Catanzaro Driscoll was referring to then here's a LinkedIn profile that looks like a match:

POSTSCRIPT:

Just to be clear, since sometimes anonymous commenters make comments mentioning specific names under no circumstances are you to name alleged parties inside MH beyond those who have publicly published comments about Catanzaro that you can back up with direct links, all right?  Personal medical histories are nothing to play with.  Mark plugs for John Catanzaro over the course of seven years?  Go ahead, quote away.  If other parties have not publicly endorsed the guy don't rush to imply or state that they have unless you have irrefutable public proof, mmkay?  Otherwise comments will get deleted left and right.

hold up, hold up ... hold up, hold up ...

That's a clue for something that will be the subject of a blog post here at Wenatchee The Hatchet a post that's been tied up because of various things in off-line life.  Another clue is in what has not yet been seen, part 2 of some tentpole franchise New Line Cinema has had something to do with in the last decade.  For too long at Wenatchee The Hatchet we have not discussed anything to do with cartoons.  That is going to change in 2014 even if, like the quad laser, it takes a while.

I can honestly say I loved people while I was a pastor. But I look back, and if I’m honest, I admit I did not minister to them because I loved them. Concern for them was not a motivation, just a by-product of liking them and them liking me.

My love for the gospel motivated me. My love for my work motivated me. The need or desire to love people did not motivate me. I did not write lessons and curriculum and sermons out of love for the people I ministered to. I did not teach and preach and plan and counsel because of love for them. Love was present but not the driving force. ...

Where are they know 2b: Scott Thomas no longer listing the Masters in Missional Leadership from Resurgence Training Center

Then again, Scott Thomas was able to earn the degree while co-teaching a practicum in the program ... or at least he used to.  Now the evidence that he taught and earned the degree has to come from some place like a republished blurb for a book at Westminster Theological Seminary
http://www.wtsbooks.com/gospel-coach-scott-thomas-9780310494324

About the Authors

Scott Thomas created the Gospel Coach Training and Certification system and has coached hundreds of pastors. Scott has served as president and network director of Acts 29 Network and as an elder at Mars Hill Church. Scott has a Masters in Missional Leadership [emphasis added] and has been married for thirty years to Jeannie, with whom he has two sons. He planted and replanted churches for sixteen years as a lead pastor. Scott has taught for Resurgence Training Center in Seattle and is a conference speaker in the US as well as a consultant for both Western European church planting and Canadian church planting. Scott wrote Theological Clarity and Application and has written blogs for Acts 29 Network, The Resurgence, Mars Hill Church and ChurchPlanting.com.

So it looks like Scott Thomas has opted not to mention the Masters in Missional Leadership these days.  For that matter Derrin Thomas, his son, has an updated LinkedIn profile.  We've discussed his profile in the past over here.  In light of Jamie Munson's accusation against Bent Meyer of nepotism it's been really, really weird to notice how thoroughly synchronized Derrin Thomas' career has been with his father's ministry trajectory up until relatively recently.

Mars Hill Church to host certificate and graduate programs pending approval of Northwest Comission on Colleges and Universities

http://marshill.com/schools.

Certificate:

...
Classes will run from fall to spring and will be held in the afternoons or evenings at Mars Hill Church Bellevue. Mars Hill is partnering with Corban, an accredited Christian university based in Oregon. Classes will be taught on-site in Bellevue by Mars Hill pastors, including Pastor Mark Driscoll, as well as university professors. ...

Because now that Thomas Nelson has indicated they are working with Mark Driscoll to rectify the various citation errors in Real Marriage both they and Mark Driscoll should have caught the first time now's a great time to enroll?

Graduate:
...
Through Western Seminary you will be able to earn a Graduate Studies Certificate at Mars Hill Church, and apply credits towards your Master of Arts or Master of Divinity degree at one of Western's many campuses*. You'll learn from our senior pastors and ministry leaders as well as seminary professors, all on-site at Mars Hill Church Bellevue.

Western Seminary is an evangelical, non-denominational theological seminary dedicated to “gospel-centered transformation.” Among its professors are Dr. Gerry Breshears, Dr. Art Azurdia, Dr. Carl Laney, Dr. Todd Miles, Dr. Kent Hughes and many other teachers recognized around the world. ...

And from none other than Breshears himself:
“During the last dozen years Western Seminary and I have partnered with Mars Hill Church in doing highest quality pastoral training based on Bible, focused on Jesus, and lived out in the church as it continues the mission of Jesus in the world. This partnership which began with Pastor Mark as a Western student will now go to many more in the new level of our partnership. I am excited to get to help more men and women prepare for pastoral service.”
Gerry Breshears, Ph.D., Professor of Theology at Western

The same Breshears who, according to Mark Driscoll in the Doctrine series, found this rabbinical commentary that supposedly affirms a Trinitarian theology centuries before Jesus?  With whom Driscoll published a book stating that Jacob Arminius was Calvin's son-in-law?  The same Breshears who hasn't published any works of note that weren't co-authored with Mark Driscoll since about the year 2000?

By the way, does Breshears' comment imply that Mark Driscoll may be budging on the complementarian/egalitarian ecclesiology debate within Protestantism?

Unsolicited advice, wait to enroll and write checks or seek financial aid until it becomes more clear whether or not Mark Driscoll will ever publicly concede that yet more citation errors occurred than in the Trial study guide.  Given the way Mark Driscoll and his publishers have been handling the plagiarism allegations it's not entirely clear whether Driscoll himself has an established track record in proper citation these days to be teaching graduate level courses.  Then again, it's not clear why Thomas Nelson and company never spotted the citation errors, either.  They've let it be known they're working on it:
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/warrenthrockmorton/2014/01/27/spokesperson-thomas-nelson-working-with-driscolls-to-address-real-marriage-citation-issues/

It's also worth noting that even in the Tyndale press statement Mark Driscoll took no direct responsibility for the citation errors, just noted that mistakes were made and he took responsibility for them, which leaves plenty of room for the earlier MH PR statement to imply that the mistakes were made by others.  Nor did the Tyndale press statement at any point address the citation issues in Real Marriage.  As Warren Throckmorton's been establishing over the last few weeks Thomas Nelson has made some small but crucial alterations to versions of the book.

Acknowledging Mark and Grace Driscoll relied on material written by Justin and Lindsey Holcomb has only recently happened and apparently without announcement of fanfare.  It's interesting that it's the Google version of the book that reflects those changes.  Why?  Because in some recently published book via The Resurgence it looks like someone wants to make sure that ...

Without limiting the right under copyright reserved above, no part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in or introduced into a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any for or by any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recorded or otherwise), without the prior written permission of both the copyright owner and the above publisher of the book.

No prize if you find out where this is from. :)  The point being that it looks as though amid increasing evidence that Mark Driscoll and associates were full of citation errors someone over in the Resurgence side of things introduced wording so stringent it looks like it could be used to claim that a book shouldn't even end up in a Google books type platform.  Now to be sure there are folks who hate Google as a champion of copyright infringement and there are some reasons for that, but that's some other topic for another venue.  How Resurgence plans to enforce that seems moot while Thomas Nelson and Mark Driscoll (but not Grace?) are working together to rectify citation errors as huge as not acknowledging the obvious, verifiable influence of Dan Allender on Driscollian thought.

At least in the Kindle edition the book Real Marriage acknowledges that the person and work of Dan Allender exists but it's not clear whether this amendation has appeared in other formats yet.

If you'd like to express your reservations about Mars Hill hosting school programs in light of recent evidence that Driscoll hasn't adequately cited a variety of sources in his published works or whatever you might wish to get off your chest ...

http://www.nwccu.org/Contact%20Information/NWCCU%20Contact%20Information.htm

Meanwhile, Throckmorton surveys old material from the defunct Resurgence Training Center from 2009 to ask the question whether Mark Driscoll would have failed if the citation errors in his books were found in work turned in at his own school.  In light of the evidence a variety of bloggers and journalists have noted in the last few months it's not a sure bet that Mark Driscoll could have graduated from Resurgence Training center with that Masters in Missional Leadership nobody had ever heard of before.

Some adjustments to the where and what of On Mission, LLC, owner of the copyright in Mark & Grace Driscoll's Real Marriage

Back on December 2, 2013 Wenatchee The Hatchet presented what was available about On Mission, LLC.

Clearly we wouldn't be bringing that up unless the most recent listing was actually different.  Mark Driscoll is no longer listed amongst Governing Persons in any direct way.

Well, that looks different.  So Lasting Legacy is possibly in one or both of two different addresses in Edmonds.  Lasting Legacy also became the LLC that got listed among governing persons for On Mission, LLC.  Interesting, though likely coincidental, that the governing persons of On Mission, LLC, which owns the copyright for Real Marriage, no longer includes Mark Driscoll in any direct way, particularly in light of news from Warren Throckmorton that Thomas Nelson has said it is in conversation with Mark Driscoll about rectifying citation errors in the bestseller, which has included adding acknowledgment to Justin and Lindsey Holcomb's work as well as acknowledging the existence and work of Dan Allender.

And then there's OMCRU Investments, LLC

and for those who'd like to read the post in which this was documented feel free to visit over here.   This address adjustment was recently brought to the attention of Wenatchee The Hatchet along with some other details that won't make their way into a post until a few details can be investigated further.

Meanwhile, for sake of review:

While there could be a few things said about that hand-shaking anecdote we're not going to get into that quite so much, at least for now.  It's too easy, for one thing, and for another the shifting of who or what is what governing person at On Mission, LLC is more interesting as Thomas Nelson has announced that they'll be working with the Driscolls to address the citation issues in Real Marriage

Warren Throckmortong: Thomas Nelson alters Real Marriage to correct another citation problem

Last time it was a changed Kindle edition acknowledgment that admitted the person and work of Dan Allender exists and that the Driscolls were influenced by his writing. This time it's to give some citational credit to Justin and Lindsey Holcomb's work that wasn't given earlier.

a rambling trip through the early companies in Sutton Turner's LinkedIn profile

Leading by serving

Sutton Turner | Executive Pastor and Executive Elder | Mars Hill Church | Seattle, WA
For the first 35 years of his life, Sutton Turner worshiped many things — toys, money, cars, career, real estate.

But, in 2005, this successful entrepreneur and Harvard Business School-educated CEO realized that despite his material possessions, he was dead on the inside. He needed God to revive his life.
Turner found a fresh start at a Texas megachurch where he served as executive pastor until 2008. “God transformed my heart, my marriage and my relationships with my kids,” he says.  After a brief stint as a church executive, Turner went to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to be the founding CEO of what is now a megabillion-dollar real estate management company.

In 2011, Turner returned to America — and to his ministry calling. He now serves as the executive pastor and one of three executive elders of what he says is a “fast-growing and financially poor church” — Mars Hill Church in Seattle. He oversees the church’s central operations and business functions, including finance, property, technology, media, communications, publishing and recording. He also mentors all the executive pastors across Mars Hill’s 14 locations. ...

We're going to do an overview of the companies Sutton Turner has mentioned on his LinkedIn profile.  First we'll start with the most recent and obvious:

1. MARS HILL CHURCH

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/sutton-turner/12/525/91b

Executive Pastor & Executive Elder

Mars Hill Church

Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Religious Institutions industry
April 2011Present (2 years 10 months) seattle, washington
Sutton currently serves Mars Hill Church as Executive Elder and Executive Pastor. Mars Hill is a multi-site church with 14 current churches across the states of Washington, California, New Mexico, and Oregon. Mars Hill has planted over 400 churches through its www.Acts29Network.org and trains disciples through www.theResurgence.org. As Executive Pastor, Sutton oversees all centralized functions for all 14 Mars Hill Churches, TheResurgence.com, Mars Hill Global, Mars Hill Network, Resurgence Books, and Resurgence Conference, all external Campaigns, as well as serving Pastor Mark Driscoll as his Executive Pastor.

April 2011 thru November 2011 he served as General Manager before becoming an elder.

General manager of MH?  Curious.  Given that by June 2012 Mark Driscoll was explaining the systemic deficits every campus of MH was running; given that Munson's policy on record was grow even when you shouldn't; it's not impossible to imagine that Turner came into MH and got the impression that the long-term fiscal approach of Mars Hill was a recipe for disaster.

By the way

Jamie Munson is Lead Pastor and President of Mars Hill Church. Pastor Jamie married his wife, Crystal, in 1999. They have four children: Caleb, Kara, Orin, and Haley.

If you try to click on Jamie Munson's hyperlink somewhere at The Resurgence you might get

We couldn't find what you were looking for.

"/authors/jamie-munson" doesn't exist on this site. Here is some recent content.

Munson's posts are still searchable and available but Munson's author profile is gone.

Munson, famously, got a fawning send-off from Mark Driscoll who then quickly had Sutton Turner introduced as someone with gifts MH had badly needed for a while.  Like Munson, however, Driscoll's sales pitch to Mars Hill was that Sutton Turner had great business experience and skill.  There's at least some case to be made that Turner has more actual business experience than Jamie Munson, whose sales pitch on leaving paid staff at Mars Hill has been to reverse his pitch and say he's a non-profit guy learning how to do corporate.

But finding stuff about Turner's corporate background has taken time.  Winston helpfully contributed some material and other materials presented themselves over a weekend of digging.

So let's keep going through Turner's LinkedIn resume to see what, if anything, we can find out about companies he's been part of.

2. WASEEF, BARWA REAL ESTATE GROUP

Chief Executive of Waseef

Barwa Real Estate Group - Doha, Qatar

Public Company; 501-1000 employees; Real Estate industry
June 2010May 2011 (1 year)
About Waseef:
Waseef was established in Q3 2009 from the merger between Barwa Property Management, Barwa Facilities Management and Barwa Hotels. It currently performs the property, facilities and leasing management for 10,000 residential units in 2011. In 2012, they will add to this massive portfolio with the addition of Barwa Financial District - a 9 tower and almost 700,000 sq. meter BUA mixed use property that will be the world headquarters of Qatar Petroleum. Waseef will expand the activities of Barwa in the local market while simultaneously cutting servicing costs and enhancing performance and quality.

About BARWA:
BARWA is one of Qatar’s world leading real estate and investment companies, established in 2005 with the mission of contributing to the sustainable growth of Qatar by investing in businesses, services and expertise. With business interests in real-estate, infrastructure, business services and financial services, BARWA's drive and determination comes from us working in tandem with the Qatari Government’s overarching development plan as laid out in Qatar Vision 2030, which stresses human, social, economic and environmental development.

BARWA aims to be one of the most successful real estate and investment companies in the world, with a home in Qatar and a business operating around the globe.

BARWA's flagship projects include: Barwa Financial District, Barwa Commercial Avenue, Barwa Al Sadd and Barwa Al Doha. Supporting these projects is a group of Business services such as Project Management, Development Management and Asset Management through specialized centers of excellence.
www.barwa.com.qa

As blogged recently, Waseef included assets sold by Barwa in a $7.1 billion sale that was planned to reduce its debt but was not particularly successful.

For a direct link to the article go here.  See also:
http://www.albawaba.com/business/qatar-real-estate-543712

Finally, it is worth noting that despite the state’s effort to invest billions into infrastructure and real estate development, not all Qatari based developers are benefitting from these injections. Mega property developer Barwa Real Estate posted a 40 per cent drop in net profit for the first nine months of 2013 even after receiving $7.1 billion in support from the state to reduce its debts.
So despite the multi-billion dollar aid from the state of Qatar to reduce its debt Barwa still posted a 40 percent drop in net profits in 2013.  Maybe they sold the assets mentioned in the Waseef orbit because those were solvent?  Others can feel free to chime in with more details.  Moving right along ...

3. Khidmah, LLC
Chief Executive

Khidmah, LLC, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Real Estate industry
May 2008July 2010 (2 years 3 months)
Khidmah is the first Emirati-owned and operated, services management company. Khidmah’s approach includes management, consulting, facilities and maintenance, leasing and re-sales, security, cleaning, landscaping, health and fitness, 24/7 bi-lingual customer call centers, all provided under a single point of contact to improve communication, increase customer satisfaction and maximize service quality, all while reducing costs. In 2010, the company operated 27 properties to include 5,000 residential units with 627 total employees.

"We teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are" is an intriguing quote.  You can peruse the rest of the short article there at your leisure.

Mr. Turner has more than 13 years experience in the real estate sector, where his particular expertise lies in the area of real estate management.  Prior to the founding of Khidmah, Mr. Turner was the Executive Director of Asset & Property for Sorouh Real Estate, P.J.S.C.  Before coming to the Middle East, Mr. Turner was President and Founder of a full-service real estate management company in the United States, where he managed more than 38 locations across 10 different states in the country, employing a team of 330 staff that delivered combined real estate services.  Mr. Turner also owned and operated a construction and facilities management company.

This? But if you follow the company link www.sorouh.com

Wenatchee The Hatchet has to trust that someone can explain what happened there and if it matters at all.

Now why isn't Sorouh Real Estate, P.J.S.C. on the LinkedIn resume?  Who knows?  But there is at least an article by Nathalie Gillet published September 28, 2009:

In these tough times, developers including Dubai Properties, Deyaar, Nakheel, Union Properties and Omniyat have created their own property management divisions. And more recently, Sorouh Real Estate has joined the club after teaming up with Capital Investment, which is based in Dubai. Their new joint-venture company, Khidmah, specialises in property management, and has 240 staff at Sas Al Nakhl and Golf Gardens, a recently delivered villa complex from Sorouh. They help residents at the state-of-the-art fitness club, maintain the swimming pool, and even check if the grass has been watered.

"During the past year, Deyaar has been working with a long-term strategy of diversifying its income streams and our planned expansion in property management is in line with this overall strategy," says Markus Giebel, the chief executive of Deyaar. Khidmah, though, aims to stand out from the competition and introduce a more comprehensive property management plan to the UAE. "Property management is not only about leasing," says Sutton Turner, the chief executive of the company. "Property management companies here tend to outsource the services. We are doing it in-house: the leasing, resale, landscaping, cleaning the swimming pool and taking care of the infrastructure, among other things. "It is a western model that I brought here because I ran a similar company in the US." Residents of Sas Al Nakhl and Golf Garden can ring Khidmah's call centre and discuss a range of issues such as a problem with the swimming pool, fitness centre or airconditioning. "We were having such a hard time finding good quality service maintenance that we felt we had to establish that business to retain the quality and to cut costs," says Mr Turner. While service management is a logical progression for major developers, other companies are taking more radical steps. Emaar Properties, for example, is shifting into the healthcare business. By the end of this year, the developer will open its first three medical centres and clinics in Downtown Burj Dubai, the Meadows and Arabian Ranches, following a partnership deal with the US private healthcare company, Methodist International.

.  That "full-service real estate management company"  in 38 states in the United States doesn't particularly look like:

Not entirely sure what all of that means but perhaps alert and business-savvy readers can unpack this for us here at Wenatchee The Hatchet.

Now, finally, it would seem, there's this:

Here's a brochure.  Of brief note is this:

In 2001, Wentwood shifted focus to properties financed with Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC).

There's also an old 1997 article

A "Big D" investment group is doing some big spending on Columbus apartments.
Affiliates of Dallas-based Wentwood Cos. have purchased four North Columbus apartment complexes totaling 1,511 units for $32 million.

The affiliated partnerships purchased the Laurel Lakes, Abbey Lane, Breckenridge and Old Nantucket apartment complexes March 27 from affiliates of Sentinel Real Estate Corp., a New York City institutional investment advisory firm. Sentinel had held the complexes for more than 10 years.
The new owners secured the $27.1 million cost of the real estate with $26.6 million in mortgages from Atlanta-based Column Financial Inc.

"We're very bullish on Columbus," said Wentwood President J. Sutton Turner. "It's a very stable market." ...

So there's that but there's this other entity that John Sutton Turner seems to have been affiliated with that hasn't come up and it's not the aforementioned Sorouh Real Estate that was merged into Khidmah, it's something else, cryptically listed as:

The notable words are "Not in Good Standing"

What was this business at Cimarron Hills Trail West?  Well, a guess is that whatever CHCC - MGA was the address turns out to be the Cimarron Hills Country Culb

It looks like we might have a match, though the general manager being Rick Schaeffer suggests leadership/personnel changes in the last half decade.  Again, readers are welcome to contribute information and preferably through links and verifiable sources about the history of this country club.  It looks like Sutton Turner had something to do with the company CHCC - MGA but precisely what happened is a mystery.  But, hey, Wenatchee The Hatchet enjoys Batman stories so ... readers are welcome to contribute here.

POSTSCRIPT, comments are welcome but let's also have some discretion.  :)  For instance, that Resurgence Publishing is a for-profit company that got set up and of which Mark Driscoll was president circa 2009 can be readily established. Speculation about the real nature of the firm (or of foundations) is interesting, to be sure, but WtH would like to stick to what can be sourced and verified.  Let's err on the side of commenting when we've figured out what's going on and can document it.

This weekend was not much of a laundry weekend so there was some extra time to do some research but washing clothes isn't necessarily going to get mentioned just any old time at the blog. Specific unidentified commenter, did you catch that? ;)
